Home/Blog / Phoenix and Goodyear Orthodontist Talks Invisalign® and Discreet Orthodontics for Children & Adults
Dr. Chris Murphy explains that a variety of innovations in the field of orthodontics have made it possible for both adults and children to avoid the aesthetic drawbacks traditionally associated with metal braces so they can correct teeth misalignment and bite irregularities in a more discreet way.
Phoenix, AZ – For decades, braces and other orthodontic treatments have been helping patients close gaps between the teeth, correct bite issues such as overbite and underbite, and generally give the teeth a straighter appearance. While braces are often thought of as treatments for adolescents, Goodyear and Phoenix orthodontist Chris Murphy, DDS says he is seeing more and more adults at his offices requesting orthodontic procedures. Dr. Murphy says one of the reasons for this is likely the fact that major technological progress in the field of orthodontics has made it possible to reduce concerns about the prominence of metal braces on one’s teeth during the treatment process. He notes that orthodontic appliances that are much less noticeable have prompted greater interest in treatment from adults and adolescent patients alike. “There is an enormous digital revolution happening in the field of orthodontics. The digital technology available today is allowing us to deliver virtually invisible treatment to more patients than ever before.”
Dr. Murphy says there are numerous options available that make straightening the teeth and correcting bite irregularities much more discreet when compared to traditional metal braces. One of the most popular at his practice is Invisalign®, which utilizes a series of custom-designed aligners made of a flexible, clear plastic material to gradually shift the teeth into better alignment. The aligners can be removed while patients eat, drink, and perform daily oral hygiene routines, and are so translucent that Dr. Murphy says they are often practically undetectable while they’re being worn. He notes that Invisalign® comes in both the standard version for adults as well as an adolescent version called Invisalign® Teen.
In some cases, Dr. Murphy says, patients have severe orthodontic concerns that may be better served by utilizing the more traditional bracket-and-wire treatment technique. However, even these treatments now offer options that can make the process more discreet for adults and children who would like to improve their smiles without everyone knowing they’re wearing braces. A treatment such as lingual braces puts a spin on the conventional method by placing the brackets and wires on the back of the teeth rather than the front, while other advanced types of braces are designed with smaller brackets, clear brackets, and other methods of lessening their visibility as they correct common orthodontic issues.
Ultimately, Dr. Murphy says, both adults and children now have more choices than ever when it comes to renewing their smiles with orthodontic treatment that doesn’t make them excessively self-conscious during the process. With that in mind, Dr. Murphy explains that, while there seems to be a growing trend of “mail-order” teeth-straightening kits available these days, he advises individuals who are thinking about having orthodontic treatment to be very cautious as they go about considering their options. He believes that patients should always seek the opinion of an experienced orthodontist and obtain treatment that is customized for their specific needs by qualified orthodontic professionals. Dr. Murphy says this can dramatically increase the chances that treatment will be as effective and successful as possible for one’s unique needs and goals.
